Ride Around Town, Or Just Keep Going.
We’ve Got Trails!
There’s no other town or village in all of New York State with as many bike trailheads as Tarrytown. In 2018, there will be seven, including a dramatic stretch across the Hudson River. If you want to get away for a mini-adventure, it only takes a short train ride from New York City.
Our beautiful trails include:
- The North County Trailway (22.1 miles), continuing for another 7.5 miles as the Putnam County Trailway;
- The South County Trailway (14.1 miles), to the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt Park and the “Old Put Trail”;
- The Old Croton Aqueduct (26.2 miles);
- The Riverwalk (completed section in Tarrytown is .6 miles);
- The Shared-Use Path across the Hudson River at the New Tappan Zee Bridge (open 2018), connecting to;
- The Tarrytown-Kensico Trailway (open ); and
- The Tarrytown Lakes Extension Pathways (2 miles around the Tarrytown Lakes).
It’s pretty out there.
Our trails weave past fields and farmlands, suburban backyards and urban forests, connecting some really interesting historic spots along the way. Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what’s out there.
The Octagon House
Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (Irvington)
The enchanting, rumoured-to-be-haunted Armour-Stiner House is a unique, domed, octagon-shaped Victorian style house located just off the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail in Irvington.
Tunnels (and more tunnels)
South County Trailway
The South County Trailway runs through some massive tunnels on its way to New York, including this one under the Saw Mill Parkway in Westchester.
Bridge Over Croton Dam
North County Trailway
Ride an old rail bridge over the Croton Dam, with views up and down the old water supply for New York City. Autumn color makes a spectacular show from the woods and water surrounding the bridge.
Brewster Train Station
Putnam County Trailway
The old (and still operating) train station in Brewster, New York, is at the end of the line along the Putnam County Trailway. Here, you can get a decent cup of coffee, a bagel, and a newspaper while you wait for your ride home.
New Tappan Zee Bridge
In 2018, the new span from Tarrytown to Nyack will be complete (with a shared-use pathway from end to end!). For now, you can watch the bridge go up, with a backdrop of the setting sun in the western sky, from the Riverwalk.
Spillway, Croton Dam
Old Croton Aqueduct Trail
The dramatic spillway for the New Croton Dam is at the end of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. You can walk above or below the dam; it’s breathtaking from any perspective.
